As a way of celebrating Heritage Month, Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva exhibits, during the whole month of May, five figurines in polychrome wood attributed to the XVIII century Escuela Quiteña (Quito School); a part of a valuable patrimonial collection belonging to the former president.

Colonial Polychrome Figures

These colonial imaginery-related figurines – colonial period three-dimensional figures created in a Baroque manner, which were attributed with miraculous powers, representing Christ, The Virgin, Saints, and other characters from the Catholic religion – give account of the importance that Eduardo Frei Montalva gave to cultural and artistic patrimony of past epochs and his fondness for it. This, in turn, allows us to reappraise the value of our own Latin American history.

One of the five figurines is of Saint Anthony of Padua, known as the “Franciscan Saint of Miracles”, who travelled through Italy and France bringing his message, dying at the age of 36, in 1231. Then, two figurines of Saint Gabriel can be appreciated, in which he appears dressed in clothes with a Roman influence, with his hands held upwards in a sign of prayer. Finally, there are two figurines called “Man and Woman in Flames”, simulating their travel to purgatory (see picture).

The figurines attributed to the XVIII century Quito School – one of the most representative cultural manifestations of artistic and religious merging between the indigenous and the European world during our colonial epoch – will be available for visiting, free of charge, from May 11th to May 18th, because of the second anniversary of Casa Museo and the International Museum Day. Also, you will be able to visit our Museum, free of charge, on Sunday 30th of May, during the XI Heritage Day celebration.

We will be expecting your visit from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Hindenburg Street 683, Providencia. Tel. (02) 881 86 74

Adults $ 1,300 (Chilean pesos)

Senior citizens, students and children $ 700 (Chilean pesos)

Once the proposal is accepted, the following tasks are undertaken: a bibliographic review of the life and work of Eduardo Frei Montalva; interviews with his close collaborators of his, such as: Patricio Aylwin, Gabriel Valdés and Raúl Troncoso; an inventory and documentation of the family collection; a photograph documentation of the interior and exterior of the house and an inventory of the original positioin of the furniture and objects. Finally, professionals are employed for the devepolment of specific proyects in various areas.

May 2005.

The propiety of former President Eduardo Frei Montalva is declared National Monument (National Dedcree Nº 0586).

The National Monument Council (Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales) based its resolution on many considerations among which, the condition of the residence stands out. The propiety, under the care of the Frei Ruiz-Tagle family, has remained practically the same as it was left after the death of former President Eduardo Frei. Furthermore, the building was considered by the Council to be part of the colletive memory of an important historic and political period of Chile, and to represent one of the prototypes of the urban residential architecture during the 40´s.

July 2005.

The consulting team submits the “Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva” draft project together with its timeline to Senator Eduardo Frei Montalva. From that moment on, the financial management for the carrying out the proyect takes place.
