The House Museum Eduardo Frei Montalva is one of the national monuments that will open its doors for free among other 70 places in the whole country. The invitation is to come and visit the house where Eduardo Frei Montalva lived for 40 years. It is especially important this year since we are commemorating his birth centennial. That day will also be your last opportunity to visit the current exhibition of “Guayasamín en Chile, 1969”.

The tour through the two story house set in the ‘60s, gives you the chance to see more than 350 original objects, such as the furniture, the presidential sash, diplomas, books, pictures and a rich collection of Chilean paintings. There is no doubt that if you visit the House Museum, you will learn more about the former president and you will also feel you have traveled back in time.

The House was declared National Monument in 2005 because of its excellent conservation and for being part of the memory of the people since it belongs to an important historical and political period of our country. The Monument Council considered that it also represents an important model of the urban residential architecture of the ‘40s.

Throughout December, part of Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva’s 250-vinyl disc collection goes on display for the first time in a special exhibition that unveils the former president’s musical tastes. Among the collection, “La Pérgola de las Flores” and “Canciones de la Patria Joven” (1964) are highlighted discs. Open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs, at 683 Hindenburg Street, Providencia.

Disc “Homage to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II of England”

In the Frei Ruiz-Tagle family’s house, music was listened to in the sitting room. There, before lunch or dinner, the family got together to share daily experiences and have an appetizer, as music played on the classic Grundig RTV 360 radio or their PE72 record player; pieces of equipment which were also used to brighten up the parties given by the sons and daughters in the house, now a museum.

Although little is known about the former president’s tastes in music, most of his personal collection of cassettes and discs is composed of classical music and Latin American folk music. The collection includes: operas by Verdi, concertos of Sibelius, arias by María Callas, Christmas specials by Ray Conniff and traditional music from Colombia and Venezuela.

This time the Museum spotlights vinyl discs forming part of the personal collection of Eduardo Frei Montalva; a display that gives account of his public and personal life. One of them is the original cover of the “La Pérgola de las Flores” disc (1960), a musical released due to the 150 years of the independence of Chile. This musical turned into a popular culture sensation. The play was also included by the former president in his program “Popular Campaign for the Diffussion of the Chilean Theater”. The program sought to bring the theater to Santiago poor districts. On view will also be the “Concierto N°3” by Beethoven, concert interpreted by the well-known Chilean pianist, Claudio Arrau, also specially dedicated to Eduardo Frei in 1964.

Disc "La Pérgola de las Flores"

Moving on to a more public side to the former president, the exhibition will also feature “Homenaje a S.M. Isabel II de Inglaterra” disc (“Homage to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II of England”) – who visited Chile and the former president’s house together with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1968 – and “Canciones de la Patria Joven” (“Songs of the Young Nation”) disc. The latter is material – directed by Vicente Bianchi – commemorating the historical event that brought together 300.000 young people from all over the country in the current Parque O´Higgins, in Santiago. A DVD of this historical event is currently available for purchase in the Museum’s shop.

Everyone is invited to appreciate objects that reflect part of the life and a different side of Eduardo Frei Montalva, this time through his special musical collection. Don’t miss it, we are waiting for you!

Open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs.

Location: Hindenburg 683, Providencia

Admission: General Admission: $1,300 pesos; senior citizens, students and children: $700 pesos.

For guided group tours previous reservation is needed.

In the context of the celebration of Heritage Day, which will be commemorated for a second time this year due to the Bicentennial anniversary of Chile, Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva will open its doors free of charge next Sunday, September 5th.

On that day, apart from the regular tour through our Museum, visitors will be able to appreciate an exhibition of 12 drawings by Oswaldo Guayasamín. Oswaldo presented the former president with this exhibition in 1969, when he visited Chile on the occasion of the opening of his exposition “Edad de la Ira” (“Age of Wrath”) in Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. At that time, the artist created the portrait of Eduardo Frei Montalva, a work that currently takes part of our Museum’s permanent collection. Likewise, panels depicting in detail the visit ─ held 41 years ago ─, as well as the development of the arts during Frei Montalva’s administration, will be featured.

The house where Eduardo Frei Montalva lived, currently transformed into a museum, was declared national monument in 2005 due to its excellent conservation and for being part of the collective memory of an important historical and political period in Chile. The tour through its two floors, decorated in a 60’s style, allows the visitor to appreciate over 350 original objects, such as: furniture, clothing, the presidential sash, diplomas, books, photographs, and a collection rich in Chilean paintings. The objects give account of a modern, yet tempered style.

We invite you to celebrate a new Heritage Day during the month of the Bicentennial anniversary; which will spotlight the Chilean Identity reflected in the historical value that every patrimonial location and building of the country entails. On September 5th, Further information on the different options available for touring this and other sites will be given by the National Monument Council in Plaza de Armas.

Location: Hindeburg Street 683, Providencia

Opening Hours: 10:00 to 18:00 hrs.

During the whole month of August, our Mouseum will put on display silver and copper trays and an ashtray, special presents from Centros de Madres (Mothers’ Centers) and Juntas de Vecinos (Neighborhood Residents’ Committees) representatives, to Eduardo Frei Montalva, in gratitude for the creation of such organizations, 42 years ago.Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva displays these objects – never before exhibited – so as to remember the publication of the law on “Neighborhood Residents’ Comittees and other Community-based Organizations” on August 7th, 1968, which gave legal protection to one of the major social reforms of the Revolution in Liberty, the named “Promoción Popular”.

That program was one of the Eduardo Frei Montalva’s administration pivotal points. It was based on the conviction that the people, being trained and organized, integrates itself with the general development of the country, thus taking part in the solution of their own problems: “Our aim consists not only in an economical development, but in a social development… this incorporation of the ordinary man through the organizations he takes part in, is what we have called Promoción Popular,” affirmed the former President in December, 1964, as he made public the bases of his program.

After four years, the announced proposal became a law, clearing the way for more direct and inclusive people-State relations. From that point on, the neighborhoods, unions, municipalities, Neighborhood Residents’ Comittees, Centros de Madres, federations, etc. were able to fully exercise their rights through a systematic collaboration with the public sector, which led to a progressive increase in their material standard of living, as well as in their sense of community. For instance, for street paving and street lighting, the people collaborated providing a workforce – and materials, occasionally –, while the State provided the materials the organizations could not.

Likewise, neighborhood leaders were trained, in order to make their relations with the authorities smoother, and women – members of Centros de Madres – were taught new trades to increase their family incomes. In this way, society began to engage in its own development and well-being.

We invite you to appreciate these original objects throughout the month. Even though they are not part of Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva’s permanent collection, we consider it important to exhibit these objects in memory and gratitude of Eduardo Frei Montalva for a substantial positive step in the social organization of our country.

Visitation is Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

As a way of celebrating Heritage Month, Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva exhibits, during the whole month of May, five figurines in polychrome wood attributed to the XVIII century Escuela Quiteña (Quito School); a part of a valuable patrimonial collection belonging to the former president.

Colonial Polychrome Figures

These colonial imaginery-related figurines – colonial period three-dimensional figures created in a Baroque manner, which were attributed with miraculous powers, representing Christ, The Virgin, Saints, and other characters from the Catholic religion – give account of the importance that Eduardo Frei Montalva gave to cultural and artistic patrimony of past epochs and his fondness for it. This, in turn, allows us to reappraise the value of our own Latin American history.

One of the five figurines is of Saint Anthony of Padua, known as the “Franciscan Saint of Miracles”, who travelled through Italy and France bringing his message, dying at the age of 36, in 1231. Then, two figurines of Saint Gabriel can be appreciated, in which he appears dressed in clothes with a Roman influence, with his hands held upwards in a sign of prayer. Finally, there are two figurines called “Man and Woman in Flames”, simulating their travel to purgatory (see picture).

The figurines attributed to the XVIII century Quito School – one of the most representative cultural manifestations of artistic and religious merging between the indigenous and the European world during our colonial epoch – will be available for visiting, free of charge, from May 11th to May 18th, because of the second anniversary of Casa Museo and the International Museum Day. Also, you will be able to visit our Museum, free of charge, on Sunday 30th of May, during the XI Heritage Day celebration.

We will be expecting your visit from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Hindenburg Street 683, Providencia. Tel. (02) 881 86 74
